“Perhaps a great future leader or a great genius is with us and their power will come from the power of the child they are today. This is the vision which we must have.
— Dr. Maria Montessori

 Dear Community,

You dream of a world where children can experience freedom, beauty, peace, leadership and grow their sense of social justice through Montessori education. At Nia House, we are guided by the powerful potential inherent in each child, and trust that your generosity will help us achieve our shared goals for the future of children and humanity. I'm writing to ask you for your ongoing support to allow Nia House to continue to offer scholarships to over 50% of our students. With your help, we can make our shared dreams a reality.

In 1974, Nia House’s founder, Tia Waller-Pryde created a mission that continues to guide the school. This past October, Tia joined members of the Nia House board and staff to share stories of her early life, personal growth, and the making of a dream into a reality. Tia shared the roots of her Nia House vision:

“My parents were active in the civil rights movement and marches and rallies against housing and employment discrimination among other issues were the backdrop of my youth. So, I knew at a young age I wanted to create a more equitable world where opportunities weren’t limited by one’s skin color or any other difference.”

It was the “backdrop of her youth” that drove Tia to create equity and limitless possibilities for children from diverse families. We, the current Nia House leadership, work wholeheartedly to carry out Tia’s dream.

Every day we witness children as leaders.

  • Carmelita, 4 years old, presents tracing the countries of North America to her 3 year old classmate

  • Izzy, 5 years old, proudly shares progress of the multiplication bead board with 2 nearby friends

  • Briella, 3 years old, sets a table for 6 classmates with the cutlery, napkins, cups and a pitcher for a proper lunch

In these moments at Nia House, we see the multitude of opportunities where children are valued community leaders.

When 2 year old Zazie gives a presentation to an 18 month-old child on the rolling of a placemat or naming family members in family portraits, we see Zazie’s independence, leadership and agency. We know that the backdrop of Zazie’s youth contains limitless potential.

The opportunities at Nia House for growth, auto education, self-discovery, and the development of intrinsic motivation takes expert guidance and resources. Let’s invest in our shared dream for children! Nia House will support our exceptional teachers and you can help us reach our goal of $700,000 this school year. We’ve raised over 25% in pledges and donations already.Together we can reach our goal before the end of this school year.

With love, gratitude and hope,

Eve Uberman, with Stacey Wood and the entire amazing Nia House Staff
