LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT + SHUUMI LAND TAX
Berkeley sits in the territory of xučyun
Nia House resides on the territory of xučyun (Huichin), the original landscape of the Chochenyo speaking Ohlone people.
This region continues to be of great importance to the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and other familial descendants of the Verona Band. We recognize that every member of the Berkeley community has, and continues to benefit from, the use and occupation of this land. Consistent with our values of community, inclusion and diversity, Nia House honors our responsibility as educators to acknowledge and teach our children the history of this land and introduce the ways in which the Muwekma Ohlone people are present, flourishing members of the Berkeley and broader Bay Area communities today.
Nia House encourages community members that are able to contribute to the Shuumi Land Tax.
